My ideas took me all over the place.. I have a huge passion for wildlife photography however I wanted to help out with the conservation trusts in South Africa. As I knew I couldn't use any of the images I had taken during my year out I had to think of something else. The wildlife conservation's in the UK are just important however they don't have as big of an impact of what people will think. So my ideas went on to food commercial, this is another one of my passions, I learned that I had an eye for creating beautiful food. I thought about a themed set such as coping still life paintings or maybe fairy tale settings.
In the end I decided to look more into food commercial as this is what I would like to go into after finishing University

So I took a year out of university to volunteer in South Africa from August 2014 - July 2015. I volunteered at a game reserve called Welgedacht Wildlife Sanctuary. It is run by Kevin Richardson, who you might know him as "The Lion Whisperer". All I can say is the place is amazing! So many opportunities to be up close and personal to such beautiful animals, for me it was only until I had to look after them that I really started to understand them. Every lion, hyena, leopard.. whatever animal, they have their own personality, likes, dislikes, though these animals are not to be taken lightly. They are after all still wild animals not our domestic pets, which Kevin knows all too well, if you read his book 'Part of The Pride' you will understand why. Their mission is to provide a self-sustaining African Carnivore sanctuary for the purpose of wild species preservation through education, awareness and funding, especially pertaining to the rapid decline of large carnivores in Africa due to habitat loss, human-predator conflict, unscrupulous hunting, disease and their illegal trade. The sanctuary is situated on a private game farm that falls within the Dinokeng Big Five Reserve, these two places together have the unique ability to attract people via Kevin’s remarkable work with lions, hyenas and leopards, as well as the opportunity to be involved in maintaining and restoring a newly established big five game reserve. |
